What is a recovery community organization?
A recovery community organization (RCO) is an independent, non-profit organization led and governed by representatives of local communities of recovery. These organizations organize recovery-focused policy advocacy activities, carry out recovery-focused community education and outreach programs, and/or provide peer-based recovery support services (P-BRSS).
The broadly defined recovery community of people in long-term recovery, their families, friends and allies, including recovery-focused addiction and recovery professionals – includes organizations whose members reflect religious, spiritual and secular pathways of recovery.
The sole mission of an RCO is to mobilize resources within and outside of the recovery community to increase the prevalence and quality of long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction. Public education, policy advocacy and peer-based recovery support services are the strategies through which this mission is achieved.
Who Was Cathy?
Cathy was an inspiration to many people inside and outside the rooms of recovery. She was known as Big Red or Mrs. C, but to us she was just Cathy. Cathy was a wife, mother, grandmother, sponsor, and friend. However, more importantly, she was a woman in recovery.
In her lifetime, she consistently exhibited a strong desire to help the people who were suffering the most. While raising a family in Fall River, Massachusetts, she was heavily involved in the recovery community. Cathy was instrumental in starting a Recovery Community Organization (RCO) in Fall River that remains operational and is still thriving to this day. Her contribution to this RCO was immense, providing peer support, advocacy, and actively working to reducing the stigma within the community.
After relocating to Florida in 2019, she quickly made a huge impact on numerous individuals including myself. Her leadership, experience, and passion served as a powerful source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Soon after her arrival, she immediately recognized a pressing need for additional recovery resources in Charlotte County. If you knew Cathy, then you know she took that as a sign to get right to work. She was hired to be the Family Peer Specialist at Kimmie’s Recovery Zone. She also began the groundwork to starting a Recovery Community Organization here in Charlotte County.
Regrettably, Cathy’s life was tragically cut short due to health complications in 2021. Nevertheless, her legacy continues through the enduring and profound impact she has left on the lives of all those in her community. It is with immense respect and honor that we establish this RCO as a lasting tribute to her memory.
